We still have a little bit of time to eke out that last vacay or staycay before the kids head back to our Southcentral schools and fall descends. If you are parents of a baby or toddler, rejoice! Instead of lugging around all those large and hard-to-maneuver baby accessories, manufacturers are stepping up and redesigning the things you’ll most commonly need on your trip. Now they’re leaner and totally portable. These travel-friendly offerings range from collapsible bassinets to strollers that do double duty.
So, go ahead, pack the fam in the car and relax because the baby, at least, will have all the comforts of home on this vacation.
Fold n’ Go Bassinet
For those times when you’ll be staying in a hotel or a home that lacks a bassinet, Brica created the Fold 'n Go baby bassinet. Its best features are that it is collapsible and lightweight so you can carry it in a large suitcase.
The baby bed features a locking frame, mesh sides and it comes with a removable crib mattress and fitted sheet, both of which are machine-washable.
This product is ideal for age newborn to 3 months, or when the child reaches 15 pounds. Purchase it at Toys “R” Us/Babies “R” Us at 8600 King St. in Anchorage or at Target, at 1801 E Parks Hwy. in Wasilla, or at one of their two locations in Anchorage, 1200 N Muldoon Rd. or 150 W 100th Ave. You can also purchase online at Amazon.com.
The geniuses at Graco released this one last year ― the Pack 'N Play Jetsetter Playard. You won’t need the aforementioned bassinet if you opt for purchasing this. The features are amazing and include:
- A domed canopy to keep out bright lights.
- A two-speed vibrating bassinet that can be removed from the playard.
- Removable changing pad.
- Mesh sides.
- Foldable with the push of a button.
Best of all, when folded it fits into the travel backpack that comes with it. Suitable for newborns, infants and toddlers. Purchase this for your little jet-setter at Target (see address above) or online at Amazon.com.
Is it a stroller or a car seat?
It’s both! Today’s travel strollers can do double duty as a car seat, ideal for those long car trips or day trips around Southcentral.
Manufactured by several well-known brands, most convertible strollers are suitable for age newborn to 4 years (or 50 pounds). Babies “R” Us says that the most popular brands in their stores include Graco Modes Click Connect (the Downton model and, no, that’s not a typo), Chicco Bravo Trio System and the Britax B-Agile 35.
These are not inexpensive. The Chicco Bravo Trio System, for instance, comes in four models, the least expensive of which retails for $349.99. But when you consider that it does double duty, you may find it worth the expense.
Not exactly a trend
But a MUST HAVE, especially if you’re the type that has baby stuff strewn all over the car. The backseat organizer keeps everything in one handy place so you don’t have to search all over the car for baby items.
We like the Tiny Travels Organizer because of the pop-out trash bin in which to stow dirty diapers. It also comes with a changing pad. You can purchase this one online at Amazon.com or at Toys “R” Us and Bed, Bath & Beyond (3090 Mountain View Drive or 601 East Dimond Boulevard in Anchorage).
The true jet-setting kid
Pack extra supplies if you’ll be travelling by air with baby. We’ve all heard the horror stories of planes that are forced to sit on the runway for hours or that make unscheduled stops. Bottles (don’t forget the nipples), pacifier (great for take-off and landing to avoid ear pain), wipes, diapers, toys and a change of clothes are some of what you’ll want to double up on when packing the baby’s carry-on.
